Across the nation, K-12 communities are experiencing a back-to-school season unlike any other. In June, education experts estimated that students would start the school year 3-12 months behind, and the worst effects are predicted for at-risk students. To accommodate the changes and alleviate the challenges associated with remote-learning, the Asombro Institute for Science Education, a partner of the Jornada LTER, has concentrated their efforts into creating remote-learning lessons and science supply kits for K-12 students in the Southern New Mexico region. These lessons include topics such as seed dispersal, wind erosion, and backyard biodiversity. Asombro has already distributed more than 1,200 supply kits and is making another 1,800.
The response from teachers and students alike have been overwhelmingly positive, and teachers have been grateful for the additions to their remote-learning curriculum. Please consider helping in these efforts through donations to Asombro’s Back-to-School, Back-to-Science fundraising campaign (flyer below). Funds will be used to support additional lesson development and the creation of science supply kits.
